Our lives can change in an instant. One moment you’re getting engaged, and a few surreal moments later you’re sitting among a group of strangers in an intensive care waiting room, praying your fiancé will survive a ruptured brain aneurysm. I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND is a moving and darkly humorous look at life outside the waiting room, when you try your hand at living again
Design notes: I Wanna Hold Your Hand is a contemporary piece, set in New York. The costumes needed to say something about character and yet remain subtle and real. The major through-line for the design was green- that particular greyed hospital green- to be a constant yet understated reminder of both illness and recovery. It appears throughout the show, as green or as an undertone of another color on everyone except Mary Jean, who lives without filters. The button on the show I couldn’t resist is the last moment, when Julia turns around and reveals a screenprint album cover on her jacket: LET IT BE.
