“It was the best of times and the worst of times.” When the French emigrant Charles Darnay returns to his native Paris to help a friend, his aristocratic past is cause for the new regime to imprison him in the infamous Bastille, where he is sentenced to death by guillotine. Design brief: I used whiteface to distinguish the nobility from the scruffy and malnourished commoners. The Marquis’ makeup incorporated a special effect; there was a makeup highlighting the bone structure of his face which appeared only under blacklight, giving his face a deathly, cadaverous glow.
